People crave the community, connectivity, and creativity of the office. This has created opportunities for the design community - to retrofit, redesign, and reimagine their workplaces coming out of the pandemic.
As organisations return to the office many workplaces are thinking about the adjustments that are needed to reorganise the space with an emphasis on employee health. Many organisations are partnering with fit-out and design firms to look at the overall facility design - exploring meeting and gathering areas and ways to quickly and easily retrofit their existing space, or potentially reconfigure it to accommodate the changing ways to support the well-being of workers.
Retrofit and reconfigure faster with reality capture
To speed up this process firms are turning to innovative laser scanning technology to fast-track the start of this journey. Documenting and capturing the existing space are the first steps towards creating a digital twin.
The Leica BLK2GO handheld imaging laser scanner recreates spaces in 3D as you move. It captures images and accurate point clouds in real-time. You don’t need previous laser scanning experience to use a BLK2GO, simply press the button and walk. Scan over and under objects, through rooms and doorways, around corners, and up and down stairwells. Using SLAM spatial awareness technology, BLK2GO knows where it is and where it has been in space.
Plan spaces faster than ever with BLK2GO and PointFuse Powered by JetStream
To show just how fast the BLK2GO is, we captured a 6500 square metre facility. What would normally take 3 days took us 15 minutes.
We take you through the approach we took.
We turned on the BLK2GO, took a walk, and it did the rest
The BLK2GO is simple to use. You don’t need to be a trained professional to use it and we were able to scan the facility while it was in full operation and everyone was able to keep working.
In 15 minutes, we had a point cloud scan
We published our scan data to an LGS data format as it opens opportunities for downstream. This is a slice of the point cloud we generated. We sent it from our Cyclone REGISTER 360 (BLK Edition) software directly into PointFuse powered by JetStream.
We brought our point cloud into PointFuse Powered by JetStream to show exactly how fast you can convert a scan into a 2D or 3D deliverable
PointFuse, powered by JetStream automatically converts point cloud data, including the LGS format and all other popular file formats, into as-built mesh models that can be classified and used in any industry CAD or BIM system. The mesh models were used for visualisation purposes and for further analysis such as clash detection.
First, PointFuse automatically segments the point cloud into colour-coded planes
PointFuse automatically creates Revit family place holders for walls, doors and windows. With optimised settings for Leica Geosystems sensors, PointFuse, powered by JetStream is an ideal companion for the Leica BLK2GO as a streamlined solution for creating LOD200 BIM used with BIM and computer-aided facility management (CAFM) systems.
The image above shows the extracted walls and floors along with the different colours of the classified mesh. These classifications are carried through to downstream software and can be given unique ID numbers as well as IFC standard categories.
Next, we classified those planes into the features needed for a floor plan, like doors, walls, and windows
Last, we exported the 3D floor plan directly to Autodesk Revit® and added our finishing touches
